5 Essential Tips for a Calm and Picture Perfect Wedding Morning
5 Essential Tips for a Calm and Picture-Perfect Wedding Morning
Your wedding day is a whirlwind of love, joy, and celebration. But let’s be honest, the morning can easily turn into a bit of a panic zone if you’re not prepared!
As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen first hand how a little planning for your wedding morning ensures a calm, relaxed experience that sets the perfect tone for the whole day.
With the help of your bridal party, you can truly enjoy those special getting-ready moments. Here are five essential tips that’ll help your day start stress-free and full of joy.
Enjoy every moment of your wedding morning with these 5 essential tips
1. Leave plenty of time to get into your dress
We’re starting with this one for good reason; planning your timeline around when you get into your dress can make a big difference to the whole morning.
It might seem like slipping into your wedding dress will take just a few minutes, but it almost always takes longer. Between buttons, laces, veils, shoes, jewellery, and a few emotional moments, it’s not unusual for the final stages to take 20–30 minutes or more.
Leave plenty of time to get into your wedding dress
Planning a bit of breathing space allow you time for tears, laughter and joy, time to share precious moments with your friends and family, without the pressure of needing to rush to get to the ceremony.
And using your dress as the anchor for your morning timeline will not only allow you loads of time to share with loved ones and friends afterwards, it’ll also help you plan backwards for a smooth, calm morning with no last-minute panic.
2. Nominate a ‘Tidy-Up Hero’!
This is about more than visuals, it’s about your peace of mind! Prep spaces really will fill up quickly with plates, glasses, gifts, make-up, hair tools, shoes, and more.
By appointing a ‘Tidy-Up Hero’ from your bridal party ahead of the day, you’ll give one person clear responsibility, plus a great sense of purpose during the morning. They’ll make sure there’s less chance of accidents (like food being spilt on a white dress!), and help you all breathe a little easier.
Spills get everywhere - especially when champagne corks are popping
A tidy space means less trip hazards, minimal spillage risks, fewer lost earrings, and a calmer atmosphere all around.
Calm space, calm mind, as the saying goes.
3. Choose a naturally lit room
Good lighting makes a huge difference, all your vendors are going to thank you for this one!
A room with plenty of natural light will help your makeup artist apply everything in daylight, which means no colour surprises later. It also gives your hair stylist a clearer view and your photographer the perfect conditions for naturally lit photographs.
Choosing a room with natural light is a great option for bridal preperation
It’s fine to have indoor lights on too (especially here in the UK!), but having access to window light, especially windows that stylists can place a chair in front of, will be a huge plus on your wedding morning and make everything feel calm, fresh and flattering.
4. PLAN FOR THE details (AKA The ‘Detail-Hero’!)
You want your wedding morning to feel joyful and relaxed, with plenty of time to connect with your favourite people. One way to protect that peace? Appoint a ‘Detail-Hero’.
This person will be in charge of gathering all your key details; shoes, jewellery, perfume, sentimental items together. Making sure they’re ready for your photographer when they ask for them. It saves you the last-minute hunt for your ‘something blue’ and keeps things flowing smoothly.
It also means that when your photographer is finished with them, they’ll be handed back and put together safely so that when it’s time to get ready, everything’s right where you need it.
Precious details and momentos deserve someone looking after them
5. The Keeper Of The Contacts (The ‘Comms-Hero’!)
Many of these tips here involve giving your bridal party meaningful roles, and this one’s no different.
Choose a senior bridesmaid to hold a list of key contacts. Vendors, family members, even the groomsmen, just in case someone needs to be reached quickly. It takes pressure off you and ensures any last-minute issues can be handled without disrupting your calm.
By having someone in your wedding party who knows how to contact everyone, and what their roles are, maybe even what time they’re expected to arrive, you’ll be able to rely on them to get in touch as necessary.
And on the other side, as a photographer, I always ask couples for a contact person on each side of the wedding. Even just texting to say I’m on-site or five minutes away can ease nerves and avoid surprise entrances, allowing you to simply relax and enjoy your morning.
